TO-SANWon-Hyo was born in 617 A.D. in the Kyongsang province. His birth name was Sol-Sedang, taking Won-Hyo as a pen name later when he became a well known scholar and monk.He formed a sect of Buddhism that relied on dilligent prayer, instead of reading from scripture, which made Buddhism more accessible to Koreans who were limited by their lack of knowledge of the Chinese language. This was referred to as "Pure Land" Buddhism, or Chongto Kyo. Won-Hyo died in 686 A.D.
